Benson (KCUB) — The Shawn Holley Era at Bisbee is off to a winning start.
The Pumas roared back from an early 7-0 deficit to beat Benson 43-13 Friday night in the season-opener for both schools.
The victory was the first for Holley as the new head football coach in Bisbee and ended a five-game losing streak for the Pumas to the Bobcats who entered the game having won 10 of the last 11 games in the series.
Pumas quarterback Sebastian Lopez threw for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also ran for a score while amassing 140 yards on the ground on 13 carries and had an interception.
Running back Bryceton Meyer had 121 yards and a touchdown. Meyer also caught five passes for 87 yards.
It was an unceremonious return for Benson to Conference 2A after the longtime power spent the 2023 season playing in Conference 3A. The Bobcats made the 3A playoffs last season but finished just 5-6.
Benson and Bisbee are in the San Pedro Region which also includes Palo Verde, Willcox, Catalina, Tanque Verde and Tombstone.
