TUCSON — Tanque Verde took the keys to the wheel of the Conference 2A San Pedro Region on Friday night.

The Hawks spoiled homecoming night at Catalina with a 58-0 victory over the Trojans.

Meanwhile down in Cochise County, winless Willcox went on the road and upset previously unbeaten Tombstone 23-20.

The Hawks (4-1, 2-0) will host the Yellow Jackets (4-1, 1-1) for their homecoming next Friday night (September 29) and will also host the other likely contender for the region title, Bisbee (3-2, 2-0) on October 13.

Tanque Verde’s Gavin Gilbert dominated on the ground for the Hawks rushing for three touchdowns in the first half. He finished the contest with 94 yards rushing and also opened the game with a safety for TVHS.

It was the second straight defeat for the Trojans (3-2, 0-2) after they began the season with three straight wins.

Tanque Verde has beaten Catalina three times in a row by way of shutout (47-0 in 2021 and 54-0 in 2022)
