Pima Basketball splits with Chandler-Gilbert
TUCSON — The 14th ranked Pima Aztecs had an easy night on the women’s side in demolishing Chandler-Gilbert 80-34 however the No. 12 men were taken down by the Coyotes at home 81-70.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Aztecs opened up a double digit lead late in the first quarter and carried it over to a 46-point win.
Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales) led the way with 18 points. Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with six assists.
Freshman Rylei Waugh also scored in double figures for Pima (12-4, 7-2 in ACCAC) as she added 12 points.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The loss by the Pima Aztecs men snapped a six-game winning streak. It as the first defeat at home this season for PCC (14-2, 6-2 in ACCAC).
The Coyotes used a 16-2 second half run to salt away the game.
Sophomore Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic) scored 20 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. He struggled from the floor in the second half going 1-for-7 and missing all four shots he took from three-point range.
Cohenj Gonzales posted 13 points and Kota Benson had 12 points off the bench.
UP NEXT
The Aztecs will hit the road to Yuma on Saturday when they play at Arizona Western College. Game time are set for 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men).
NOTES
Waugh and Baker have earned ACCAC Player of the Week honors for a third time each this season.
Waugh received the honor for the Nov. 5-11 and Dec. 10-16 weeks of play.
She totaled 32 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals last week as the Aztecs won at Scottsdale 63-54 but fell short at Cochise 65-55.
Waugh is currently second in the ACCAC in scoring (16 ppg) and assists (6 apg).
Baker picked up his previous two awards the weeks of Nov. 27-Dec. 3 and Dec. 25-31.
He averaged 20 points last week as the Aztecs swept Scottsdale and Cochise and is scoring at a rate of 19 points per game on the season.
