Bears down Arizona to win Pool A

Wildcats will face Stanford in the Pac-12 semifinals on Friday

HIGHLIGHTS: California 7, No. 18 Arizona 5

SCOTTSDALE — The bad news?

No. 18 Arizona Baseball lost 7-5 to California Thursday night in their final pool play game of the Pac-12 Tournament.

The good news?

No. 2 seed Oregon State is going home for the weekend as a result of the Golden Bears triumph.

Peyton Schulze hit a pair of home runs and finished with five RBI for California (36-18) as the Bears win Pool A (2-0) and advance to play Southern California in the semifinals on Friday afternoon.

The Trojans knocked off Oregon 4-2 on Thursday to win Pool C (2-0).

Stanford had wrapped up Pool B (2-0) prior to Thursday with a pair of one-run wins over Arizona State and Oregon State.

Cal jumped up 7-1 on UA thanks to a three-run home run by Schulze in the 3rd and a two-run shot by the Bears’ 1st baseman in the 5th.

The Wildcats got home runs by Mason White, a solo shot and a three-run jack by Maddox Mihalakis to get back to within two in the 8th.

Jackson Kent (3-4) took the loss for Arizona, allowing all seven runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out seven and had a pair of walks.

California and USC will play at 2:30 p.m. at Scottsdale Stadium on Friday. UA and Stanford will face off at 7 p.m. The winners of the two semifinals will play for the tournament championship at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Clark Candiotti (6-3, 3.27) will start on the mound for Arizona against the Cardinal.

JACKED SON

Jackson Kent struggled for a 4th straight start on Thursday night. The sophomore is 0-3 with a 10.13 ERA over that stretch having allowed five of his seven home runs.

Kent went nine starts between March 1 and May 10 without allowing a home run.

TERRITORIAL CUP SERIES FINAL

Arizona State’s loss to Oregon State earlier in the day was likely the end of the Sun Devils season and prevented a semifinal meeting between ASU and Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament.

The Territorial Cup Series comes to an end with a final score of 12-10 in favor of the Wildcats.

The baseball point was split this season. ASU won 2-of-3 from the Wildcats during the Pac-12 regular season series and Arizona won the lone non-conference game between the two rivals.
