TUCSON — Sabino has long been one of the better football programs in Southern Arizona and they finally solidified that reputation with a Conference 3A state championship in 2023.

It was the 4th for a school that came of age with three titles in the 1990s (1990, 1992 and 1998).

Gone though is most of the firepower that led to that championship run and Ryan McBrayer’s crew is forging ahead with a freshman quarterback.

The Sabercats opened their season with a breeze, shutting out visiting Coolidge 40-0 but Week 2 saw the first speed-bump of this new campaign as Sabino’s four-game winning streak over rival Sahuaro was snapped in a 15-14 defeat at the Saberdome.

Wildcats Radio 1290 headed out to the east side for Sabino’s season-opener and chatted with an array of student-athletes who are leaders on and off the field and know what it takes to win at a high level.

Ellie Appleman (Track), Parker Davison (Track), Brooklyn Ball (Soccer), Bobbi Valles (Softball), McKenzie Warren (Swimming), Mason Rustand (Swimming & Wrestling), Chris Yslas (Football), Victor Alcantar (Football), Josh Curtis (Football), head football coach Ryan McBrayer and principal Kevin Amidan all stopped by the show to talk about what it means to them to wear the purple and gold and represent Sabino High School.
