Cats make Maymon a winner in her UA coaching debut

The Wildcats blow away former coach Laura Ianello’s Texas Longhorns on their way to a 3-shot victory

GRAND HAVEN (MI) — Arizona Women’s Golf opened the 2024-25 season by winning the Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes Golf Course by three strokes over No. 6 Florida State and 15 strokes over No. 3 Texas.

The Wildcats as a team posted the round of the day, a 6-under total of 282, while senior Carolina Melgrati took second place individually for the best individual finish of her career.

Melgrati had a three-shot lead entering the final round but Florida State’s Mirabel Ting caught her on the 14th hole and won the tournament by birdieing five of the final six holes. Melgrati bogeyed 16 and 17 but carded a birdie on 18 to finish alone in 2nd place.

The victory makes first-year head coach Giovana Maymon the first women’s golf head coach in Arizona history to win her debut tournament.
