Pima dominates on both fronts: men’s soccer earns eighth shutout, women’s soccer blanks Paradise Valley

TUCSON — It was a stellar Saturday for Pima soccer, with both the men’s and women’s teams securing commanding shutout victories over Paradise Valley. The men’s team continued their dominant run with a 4-0 win, while the women’s side overpowered the Pumas 7-0.

The No. 4 ranked Pima men (11-1, 10-1 ACCAC) picked up their fourth consecutive shutout victory on the road, defeating Paradise Valley (4-5-2) 4-0. This marks the Aztecs’ eighth shutout of the season.

Freshman Robert Castaneda (Nogales) opened the scoring early with a goal in the 5th minute, assisted by sophomore D’Andre Pickett (Tucson Magnet).

Pickett doubled the lead just four minutes later with a goal of his own, making it 2-0 by the 9th minute.

Freshman Jay Hogan continued his scoring streak, netting a goal in his fourth consecutive match with a strike in the 42nd minute.

Castaneda added to his impressive performance with an assist in sophomore Ismael Ruiz’s goal in the 47th minute, sealing the 4-0 win.

The Aztecs controlled the game offensively, taking 10 shots on goal and holding Paradise Valley without a shot in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Jose Carlos Ortiz made three saves to secure the shutout.

The Aztecs will return to West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday to host Mesa at 5:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The No. 11 Aztecs (8-2) dominated Paradise Valley (1-7) with a 7-0 shutout win, their sixth shutout of the season. The Aztecs have now outscored the Pumas 13-0 in their two regular-season meetings, after a 6-0 victory on Aug. 31.

Freshman Kristal Navarro (Tucson Magnet) kicked off the scoring in the 9th minute, followed by freshman Kamelani Peralta (Tucson Magnet) scoring in the 10th minute, assisted by sophomore Solaris Graves (Ironwood Ridge HS).

Graves then added a goal of her own in the 20th minute to put the Aztecs up 3-0, before sophomore Lizzie Walker (Canyon del Oro) found the back of the net with an assist from sophomore Uriah Burrell (Catalina Foothills HS) in the 28th minute to make it 4-0.

Freshman Ashley Martinez (Sunnyside) scored twice in the second half, with assists from Kassandra Vasquez in the 48th minute and Ariela Sanchez-Hermosillo (Sahuaro) in the 76th minute.

Sanchez-Hermosillo continued her playmaking, assisting freshman Yatana Acosta’s (Tucson Magnet HS) goal in the 78th minute.

The Aztecs dominated the match, outshooting Paradise Valley 23-1. Freshman goalkeeper Phoebe Knisley (Canyon del Oro) recorded one save to complete the shutout.

Pima will be back on the field Tuesday at West Campus Aztec Field, hosting Mesa Community College at 7:00 p.m.
