Cats rally from 2-1 down to beat Jayhawks in 5
TUCSON — Arizona came back from what arguably might have been their worst performance of the season in Wednesday night’s 3-0 loss to Kansas State to stun No. 8 Kansas 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 27-29, 25-20, 15-13) Friday night at McKale Center.
It was UA’s 1st win over a Top 10 team in a non-COVID-19 season since sweeping UCLA at home in 2016.
Junior hitter Jordan Wilson had a career-night with 37 kills, hitting .465 with 12 digs.
The 37 kills are the most since Madi Kingdon put up 33 in an NCAA Tournament loss to BYU in 2014 and tied Kim Glass for 3rd most all-time in a match by an Arizona pin.
The victory snapped a four-match losing streak for UA (14-9, 3-9). Arizona had won just two sets over that stretch and hit a dreadful .168 in getting swept by the KSU Wildcats to open their weekend homestand.
Jaelyn Hodge had 18 kills on the match while freshmen Carli Cisneros added 15 and 16 digs. Setter Avery Scoggins had 61 assists to go along with 20 digs while Haven Wray dug 18 balls for Arizona.
Ayah Alnady led Kansas (20-3, 11-2) with 28 kills. The Jayhawks came to the desert in first place in the Big-12 but leave in second place behind No. 11 Arizona State after being swept by the Sun Devils and Wildcats.
UA beat a 7th ranked and defending NCAA champion Stanford squad twice during the Pandemic 2021 spring campaign. The Cardinal however entered that match with just nine days of indoor practice and after having to cancel their first four scheduled matches due to COVID-19 related issues.
Arizona hits the road to take on Cincinnati on Thursday, November 14 before heading to West Virginia on Sunday, November 17.
