Martinez and Williams win conference honors but Gilbert is done for the year
TUCSON — For the 1st time in the history of the program, Arizona Women’s Basketball swept the weekly conference top player awards.
The Pac-12 announced Monday that 5th year forward Esmery Martinez is the conference’s Player of the Week while guard Jada Williams was named Freshman of the Week.
Martinez averaged 19 points and 9 rebounds in Arizona’s sweep of the Bay Area schools. She scored 17 points in Arizona’s upset of No. 3 Stanford (68-61), the Wildcats’ first road win against the Cardinal since 2001.
The Dominican Republic native led the Wildcats with 20 points while dishing out seven assists in the 87-68 win at California.
Williams averaged 21 points and shot 50% on the weekend. She scored a career-high in the victory over the Cardinal including scoring 14 points in the final four minutes to spark UA back from a nine-point deficit.
GILBERT WILL NOT PLAY
Leading scorer Kailyn Gilbert did not make the trip to the Bay Area this past weekend and Barnes told Wildcats Radio 1290’s D.K. on the Sports Tip that she will not be back with the program this season.
Gilbert started 19 of the 23 games she appeared in averaging 15 points per game. She scored all six points in overtime of a January win over Utah.
The sophomore had entered the transfer portal at the end of last season but opted to return for a second year at UA.
She missed three conference games in late January/early February due to an undisclosed injury. Her playing time was cut drastically in the four games after her return all the way down to Gilbert playing only three minutes in Wildcats’ 55-minute triple-overtime win over Washington.
