Sabino opens defensive of title with shutout

Sabercats roll to a 40-0 win over Coolidge

HIGHLIGHTS: Sabino 40, Coolidge 0

TUCSON – It was a typical late August Friday night in Southern Arizona.

Monsoon threatened to wreak havoc with the 2024 high school football season opener for reigning Conference 3-A state champion Sabino.

But in the end the clouds broke and the Sabercats quickly broke the will of visiting Coolidge, pounding the Bears 40-0 in front of a raucous crowd at the Saberdome.

Gone are Cameron Hackworth, Mason Cade and the Berryhill brothers who helped lead Sabino last season to their first state championship in 25 years.

In steps freshman quarterback Bodhi Sanford. He threw a pair of touchdown passes to senior slotback Brit Roberson. Junior running back Zahari Haley ran for two scores and defensive end Paul Ortiz had a pair of scoop and scores. He returned two fumbles for touchdowns of 25 and 4 yards.

POSTGAME: Zachari Haley

Sabino (1-0) hosts rival Sahuaro next Friday night in the Coaches for Charity Kickoff Classic.
