Wildcat Report: Labor Day Weekend

It was a positive opening-weekend all around for UA

TUCSON — Arizona Football opened the 2024 season with a 61-39 victory over New Mexico and the Wildcats’ volleyball and soccer teams were equally flawless on the scoreboard.

VOLLEYBALL

The Wildcats won the final game of the Cactus Classic, 3-0, over Tennessee State on Sunday to sweep opening weekend. Carlie Cisneros, Jaelyn Hodge, and Kiari Robey were named to the Cactus Classic All-Tournament Team.

Arizona’s offense hit .333 and was led by outside hitter Jordan Wilson with 14 kills. Wilson also had 14 digs. Cisneros and Hodge both tallied 13 kills while the trio of pins hit .340 or higher. Cisneros as well posted a double-double with 13 digs.

Hodge led UA (3-0) with 42 points on the weekend. Cisneros had 41 and Hodge 34. Sophomore Ana Heath and freshman Avery Scoggins split time at setter. Scoggins averaged 11 assists per set to Heath’s eight.

Journey Tucker led the Wildcats in blocks with 8. Transfer Kiari Robey added 7.

The Wildcats will head to Alabama State for the ASU Collegiate Cup for the second week of the season. Arizona will face Alabama State on Thursday, September 5 at 4 p.m. MST to kick off the tournament.

SOCCER

The Wildcats wrapped up their weekend on the road Sunday in Irvine, California with a 3-0 victory over the UC Irvine Anteaters.

Arizona got goals from senior Gianna Christiansen, who had a brace (two goals) on the day and freshman Rose Calkins. Goalkeeper Olivia Ramey had three saves.

The Wildcats drew 1-1 in their first game on the road trip Thursday at Pepperdine.

UA (4-1-1) will return to Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium this Thursday for a match against New Mexico State at 7:00 p.m. MST.

CROSS COUNTRY

Arizona Cross Country opened the 2024 season on Saturday at New Mexico State’s Lori Fitzgerald Open in Las Cruces.

The Wildcat Women finished second overall in the competition and the Arizona Men placed third. The women’s top finisher was Molly Lakustiak (5th, 17:59.02) and the men’s was Gideon Mengich (10th, 14:54.90).

Texas Tech won the ladies race while New Mexico took 1st place on the men’s side.

The Wildcats will be back in action on September 13 for the Cougar Classic in Colfax, Wash.
