Pima Men’s and Women’s teams secure victories with impressive performances

TUCSON — Pima Soccer teams excelled on Tuesday, with the No. 4 men’s team overpowering Chandler-Gilbert 9-0, showcasing an impressive offensive performance and strong teamwork. The No. 11 women’s team also triumphed, defeating Chandler-Gilbert 4-0 to snap a 2-game losing streak and regain momentum heading into their next matches.

The Aztecs (10-1, 9-1 ACCAC) continued their remarkable season, dominating Chandler-Gilbert (0-10) with a 9-0 shutout at the West Campus Aztec Field. This marked the Aztecs’ seventh shutout win of the season and secured their double-digit win record.

The Aztecs took early control with a flurry of four goals in just four minutes during the first half. Sophomore Brandon Sanchez (Canyon del Oro HS) spearheaded the attack, completing a hat trick with goals in the 24th, 37th, and 50th minutes. Sanchez’s performance was instrumental in keeping Pima on the front foot throughout the match.

Sophomore Ismael Ruiz (Tucson Magnet HS) showcased his playmaking ability, providing three assists and scoring a goal of his own in the 64th minute. Ruiz was a key orchestrator in setting up Jacob Lund-Iversen, Mateo Soto, and Sanchez for their goals.

The Aztecs fired 22 shots on goal, while their defense allowed Chandler-Gilbert only two attempts. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Cristerna Oleta (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the game with two saves to help preserve the clean sheet.

The ladies (7-2) bounced back from a two-game losing streak with a commanding 4-0 victory over Chandler-Gilbert (2-7). The win marked their fifth shutout of the season.

Freshman Anjeli DesRosier (Salpointe Catholic) opened the scoring in the 21st minute, assisted by Kamelani Peralta (Tucson Magnet). Sophomore Lizzie Walker (Canyon del Oro) doubled the lead with a goal in the 36th minute after coming off the bench.

Late in the game, the Aztecs added two more insurance goals. Camila Razcon (Marana) found the back of the net in the 85th minute with an assist from Uriah Burrell (Catalina Foothills), and Viviana Sanchez (Tucson Magnet) scored just two minutes later to cap off the win.

The Aztecs controlled the match with 17 shots on goal, while freshman goalkeeper Phoebe Knisley (Canyon del Oro) made five saves to keep Chandler-Gilbert at bay.

The women’s team will also head to Paradise Valley for their next match on Saturday, with a 2:00 p.m. start time.
