Wildcats Radio 1290 has all you need to know on the weekend in Pima Athletics

TUCSON – In an eventful week for Pima Athletics, standout performances lit up the field while the volleyball team faced tough competition. As the soccer teams continue their dominant streaks, the volleyball squad is determined to bounce back from recent losses. Here’s a closer look at the latest action from the Aztecs.

MEN’S SOCCER

Jose Luis Martin Montealegre’s hat trick propels No. 4 Men’s Soccer to ninth shutout win of the season

The Pima men’s soccer team (13-1, 12-1 in ACCAC) cruised to a 4-0 victory over Gateway (1-11), marking their sixth consecutive win. Sophomore Jose Luis Martin Montealegre was the Star of the Match, netting a hat trick with goals in the 10th, 25th, and 85th minutes.

With a total of 29 shots on goal, the Aztecs showcased their offensive power while maintaining a strong defense that limited the Geckos to just two attempts. Sophomore Dohyun Koh also contributed significantly, assisting on two goals.

The Aztecs will look to keep their momentum going with an upcoming match against South Mountain on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Camila Razcon, Aztecs Women’s Soccer secures fourth straight shutout win after toppling Gateway.

The Aztec ladies (10-2) delivered an outstanding performance against Gateway (0-11), winning 5-0 and achieving their fourth straight shutout. This victory adds to the Aztecs’ impressive record, marking their 11th double-digit win season in the last 14 years.

The No. 9 ranked Aztecs showcased their offensive depth, with five players scoring goals, including Solaris Graves and Jessica Alvarez. Sophomore Camila Razcon excelled with two assists, playing a crucial role in the team’s success. The Aztecs will host a scrimmage against Park University before returning to conference play next Saturday against Glendale.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pima Volleyball (11-11, 8-5 in ACCAC) faced a tough challenge in a match against No. 22 Glendale (14-4, 10-3), losing in straight sets: 25-23, 27-25, 26-24. This marks the Aztecs’ third consecutive defeat against nationally ranked teams.

Despite the outcome, the Aztecs demonstrated resilience, battling back in each set. Notably, sophomore Haylee Gilleland led the team with 15 kills and three blocks, pushing her team to competitive heights. With the road ahead still challenging, the Aztecs are set to take on Phoenix College in their next two matches, determined to turn things around.

With thrilling displays from the soccer teams and a commitment to improvement from the volleyball squad, Pima sports continue to capture the excitement of fans this season.
