Arizona Triathlon knocks ASU off title pedestal

Wildcats win nationals in just 2nd season

CLERMONT, Florida – Arizona Triathlon captured the national championship on Saturday, defeating rival Arizona State and ending the Sun Devils seven-year reign over the emerging collegiate sport.

It’s the first national championship for the program in just its second year of existence.

Junior Kelly Wetteland capped off her amazing season with a second place finish individually in a time of 59:20, just 13 seconds behind first place finisher Naomi Ruff (ASU).

Four Wildcats finished in the Top 10 to propel UA to the title.

Arizona Athletics has now won 23 team national championships in its history, with this being the first since women’s golf win the national title in 2018.

To date, more than 40 schools offer women’s collegiate triathlon at the varsity level, an important benchmark reached earlier this year as the NCAA Emerging Sport for Women now has a few more steps to take on its way to being fully managed by the NCAA as a Championship Sport.
