Brewers add LHP Jose Quintana, place LHP DL Hall on 60-day IL

The Milwaukee Brewers addressed a fluid situation among their left-handed pitchers by signing veteran Jose Quintana on Wednesday to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2026.

Terms were not announced, but MLB.com reported Quintana, 36, will earn $4.25 million this season.

“I’m so excited to be a part of this group,” Quintana said. “It’s a lot of younger guys, and right away I feel that energy. Now I understand, after just a couple of days here, why they win.

“It’s a new journey for me and I’m excited for the next chapter of my career.”

In a corresponding move, the Brewers placed left-hander DL Hall (left lat strain) on the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster.

Hall, 26, will be out at least until May 26. He joins left-hander Robert Gasser, who isn’t expected to return until late this season after having Tommy John surgery on June 24, 2024.

The Brewers also are dealing with an oblique injury to left-hander Aaron Ashby, who exited early from his start on Monday and underwent an MRI scan. Ashby, 26, is awaiting a second opinion on the diagnosis.

Quintana went 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA in 31 starts for the New York Mets in 2024. He went 0-1 with a 3.33 ERA in three postseason games, taking a loss in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He is 102-103 with a 3.74 ERA in 359 career appearances (333 starts) across 13 seasons with seven different teams, most notably the Chicago White Sox (2012-17).

Milwaukee initially had shut down Hall for several weeks starting in mid-February, putting his availability for Opening Day in jeopardy.

Hall went 1-2 with a 5.02 ERA in 13 games (seven starts) in 2024, his first season in Milwaukee. A knee sprain limited him to 84 innings pitched with the Brewers (43) and at Triple-A.

The Brewers acquired the 2017 first-round pick from the Orioles in February 2024 in the deal that sent right-hander Corbin Burnes to Baltimore. Hall is 5-3 with a 4.74 ERA in 42 career games (eight starts) for the Orioles and Brewers.

Milwaukee selected Ashby in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft. He is 6-14 with two saves, a 4.20 ERA, 69 walks and 198 strikeouts in 167 1/3 innings in 54 games (25 starts) over parts of three seasons (2021-22, 2024).
