Seth Jarvis scored two goals and the Carolina Hurricanes had a strong third period to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 on Friday night in Raleigh, N.C.
Jackson Blake also scored for the Hurricanes, while Pyotr Kochetkov made 29 saves. Jordan Martinook provided two assists.
The Hurricanes snapped a two-game skid, avoiding what would have been their second three-game losing streak of the season.
Tomas Hertl and Shea Theodore scored for the Golden Knights. Adin Hill stopped 25 shots but allowed two of Carolina’s eight shots in the third period to find the net.
Carolina overcame a 0-for-4 outing on power plays.
Blake and Jarvis scored in the third period as the Hurricanes surged into the lead.
Blake’s goal came 46 seconds into the period.
Jarvis then took a pass from Jordan Staal as the Hurricanes converted on a well-executed breakout for a 3-1 lead at 6:09 of the period. It marked the 15th goal of the season for Jarvis.
But Theodore countered on a Vegas power play, reducing the margin to one goal 9:52 into the final period on a shot from the point. The goal came just 29 seconds into the power play.
The Golden Knights hadn’t played since Tuesday night and they showed plenty of energy. They put 13 shots on goal in the first period, but they didn’t have 13 more until midway through the third.
Hertl scored 4:22 into the second period for the game’s first goal. It marked the seventh time in the last eight games that the Hurricanes surrendered the first goal.
Jarvis got the Hurricanes on the board with 8:03 to play in the second period. Jarvis was stationed near the slot and converted by swiping at the puck that was near his skates after a pass from Martinook.
Goalie Frederik Andersen of the Hurricanes was activated earlier in the day after missing about 2 1/2 months because of a knee injury. He served as Kochetkov’s backup.
