Dug McDaniel scored 20 points on 8-for-17 shooting as Kansas State stunned No. 3 Iowa State with an 80-61 win in a Big 12 Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.
Coleman Hawkins finished with 17 points and seven rebounds for Kansas State (10-11, 4-6), which won its third game in a row. Brendan Hausen scored 15 points and Max Jones chipped in 12.
Tamin Lipsey scored 20 points to lead Iowa State (17-4, 7-3), which lost on its home court for the first time since Feb. 27, 2023. The Cyclones had won their previous 29 home games, which marked the second-longest active streak in the nation.
Kansas State shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the field and 50 percent (10-of-20) from beyond the arc. Iowa State shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) overall and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from 3-point range.
A 12-0 run increased Kansas State’s lead to 19 points with 13:45 remaining. McDaniel opened the surge with a layup and a 3-pointer, Hausen added two free throws, Jones made a jump shot and Hausen punctuated it with a 3-pointer to make it 58-39.
Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger drew a technical foul during the Kansas State run as frustrations bubbled over on the Cyclones’ bench.
The hosts rallied with a 13-0 run to pull within 58-52 with 10:05 to play. Hausen answered with a 3-pointer that made it 61-52 and sparked another eight-point flurry that essentially put the game away.
Hawkins hit a 3-pointer to increase the Wildcats’ advantage to 73-59 with 3:48 to go, and the visitors kept Iowa State scoreless over the final 3:36.
Kansas State held on to a 37-35 lead at the half.
The Cyclones jumped to a nine-point lead in the first four minutes. Joshua Jefferson made a layup to give Iowa State a 13-4 advantage with 16:19 left in the first half.
Kansas State responded with a 13-3 run to grab the lead. McDaniel had a steal and a layup to put the Wildcats on top 17-16 with 12:28 remaining.
